2026 BCH in Argentina

To start our day today we arrived at school with mixed feelings. Many of us were sad to leave our host families and friends behind, but we also were a little happy to come home and see our families and enjoy a warm summer, since Argentina was pretty cold. When we got to school, we went to home room and said prayer, then after, we went and did class with the 3rd year kids. After that class we grabbed a snack and then we went to our farewell meeting with our host brothers and some of the faculty. After sharing some kind words with our host brothers, we went to a Spanish class and learned about the structures of sentences in Spanish. To finish off the day, we played fútbol with some of our host brothers, and then bid them goodbye as we left for the airport. I know we all miss our host brothers and families, but I believe that somewhere down the road we will reunite with them one way or another. Thank you Sra. Basin and Sra. Today was a very fun last full day and was a great way to end the trip. In the morning after a quick snack we took the bus to the countryside to visit the estancia. When we got there we had some time until the asado and actual event started. We were treated with empanadas, and we played soccer for a while. After soccer, we took a horse wagon ride around the area to get a little tour. We visited a museum of the estancia, played some more soccer, and then finally the asado was ready. All the food was very good and since it was unlimited we all were very full by the end of it. We watched a tango performance, listened to music from the performers, and at the end we all danced. After the asado we watched gauchos ride horses and do a performance. We then took the bus back to the colegio. I got picked up right from the colegio and went back to my host family’s apartment from there. For the final night, me and my host family went to a restaurant next to the Boca juniors stadium. Today was the beginning of our last weekend in Buenos aires, and this morning I had a nice chance to sleep in a bit, and I woke up around 11. Nacho had rugby training, so I went with Jeff and Pedro to watch a rugby game. It was pretty fun, and Newman, the team we were supporting, won by a good amount. After that, I went home to get ready for Jeff’s birthday party. I got ready pretty quickly and we left soon after, and got to Pedro’s house around 8:30. Nacho and I were one of the first people there, so we helped set up a little bit. When everyone was there, Juanfran started the asado and it was amazing, and I had a bunch of choripan. To start off our day today we arrived at school and did prayer with the 5th year students. After finishing prayer, all of the exchange students met up with the chaperones and we walked to La plaza de Mayo. We went into a few of the churches in the plaza and found a lot of artwork and architecture dating back to the 16 hundreds. We walked around La plaza and saw La Casa Rosada (equivalent to the white house), and we also learned about some of the many statues in the plaza. One of the buildings we went and toured was the city hall, which had many interesting rooms filled with all sorts of symbolic artwork and artifacts. After the tour we headed back to the school, but on the way back we stopped by a librería which had books dating way back. We had about an hour when we got to the school, and ate some delicious milanesa. After school finished, I headed home and took a nap, and then at about 8:30 I went to an asado and watched the world cup match with some of my host brother's friends....

Today I started off the day a little differently than normal because me and me and Pedro had to where a shirt and tie. The reason for this is that the 5th years and the 4th graders were celebrating flag day. Once we arrived at school the ceremony began soon after. Many of the exchange students were honored in this ceremony as flag holders due to their outstanding grades and effort. After this amazing ceremony all of the Boston kids left the school to visit the Palacio Barolo. It was a very interesting building that had a lot of history. The building was based on Dante’s Inferno and the tour went really in depth into every level of the building. This tour was the end of our planned day. Once we arrived back to school we ate lunch and played a bit of soccer. Most of the Argentina students had a meeting so me and other students had to spend a little bit of time at the school waiting. Today I started my day with bananas for breakfast, one of my favorite fruits I rarely get the pleasure of eating back in the states. We grouped up and left to head to our graffiti tour. We took the train from the school to a nearby neighborhood called  Palermo  which was where our tour would begin. However before our tour began the others and I decided to spend some time at an empty playground roughly 50 feet away from our starting point and it was a fantastic experience being able to be a kid again swinging on swings for a solid 5 minutes. After our playground excursion, the tour finally began and after it had concluded I can confidently say that this was my favorite tour in all of Argentina thus far. We learned a lot about many different artistic designs/styles and we got to see dozens of different and unique pieces that had some truly amazing stories attached to them. We had a lot of fun today. My host brother and I ate an awesome breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast, before walking to school. We got to attend classes, and I learned about some important economic formulas. Everyone was discussing Messi’s hat trick and Argentina’s win, even the teachers. We then went to art class, and practiced different methods of drawing an image of the school. After a quick snack, we walked to the Ateneo, a famous bookstore that was converted from a theater. We looked around, and I bought some gifts for my family. After returning to school, we waited for our host brothers to finish a test before heading home. Then, the event everyone looked forward to; Tango class! Yesterday, we visited a all-girls’ school named Mallinkrodt and spent time speaking with the students. The girls were then invited to tango class. We all went to the ballroom, and learned and practiced the steps of the tango while waiting for the girls. For my blog for today, I will be talking about how a normal morning routine works for me and the events that followed. We take the public bus to school everyday because it is the most convenient form of transport to Colegio del Salvador. To add, we would be going to the Fine Arts Museum. It was really interesting to see the differences between both Argentinian and European traditional art. The Argentinian art was more based on people rather than important events which was fascinating to see. After this, we went to eat lunch at a local restaurant. I believe I had Pascal de Pollo and it was delicious. It came with French fries too which were quite tasty. Today we did a lot of walking, but I can’t complain because in a big city, one must walk. The city of Buenos Aires has many diverse aspects. In each barrio (neighborhood), there are different types of buildings, and there are always more sites to see. After an amazing weekend at Tomas’s weekend house in the countryside outside of Buenos Aires (a little over an hour away), we wrapped things up with another incredible asado. Yesterday, we had enjoyed an asado with a few of the other brothers to celebrate Tomas’s birthday, but this one included everyone in the exchange program. The food, as always, was outstanding. We had chicken, steak, sausage, and some other meats that I don’t know the names of, but they were all delicious. While we ate, we watched a fútbol match between Cape Verde and Spain. The game ended in a tie. Afterward, we had a big fútbol match against each other. It was a lot of fun and another great opportunity get closer as a group. I left a little early, and at that point the game was tied 2-2, so I don’t know who ended up winning. However, based on the way my team was playing, I’m pretty confident we came out on top. This was our first weekend in Argentina, and it was very relaxing! Today, I woke up and ate some breakfast, before playing my host brother Franco in FIFA. Although he won every single game, it was a great start to the day. After some downtime, my host family and I went to lunch in Puerto Madero. We ate some great steak as well as some empanadas. After lunch, we went shopping for a little bit, before returning home and watching the Netherlands face Japan in the group stages of the world cup. After that, we had a lot of downtime, which we mostly spent playing fifa and watching more of the world cup. Finally, we went out to dinner and I ordered milanesa napolitana. -Alex

After a week of adjusting to the busy schedule and very late nights, it was nice to have a relaxing day and catch up on sleep. However, we started the day with business as usual, getting up at 8 AM to see my host brother, Juanfran, play in a football game. We went to the pitch about 45 minutes outside of the city to watch. They won! Afterwards I joined the team for a passionate celebration in the locker rooms with dancing and shouting. I also got to try an amazing hot dog with crispy potatoes on top. After that, we went back to the apartment to rest for the afternoon. Exhausted from the week, I took a nice long nap for a couple hours before waking up and FaceTiming my parents. Then it was time to hit the streets again, this time to watch the Brazil v. Morocco World Cup match at a friend’s apartment. I started off my day today a bit tired, as I’m still getting used to the Argentinian schedule. I had some toast and took a shower, and then I was out of the door. I get rides to school with my host father, and usually get there a little bit earlier than most of the others. Ignacio and I then went to our morning roll call which happens every morning, which is usually pretty chaotic. After that, I went to a class called Sociales which was pretty fun, as I had a lot of mate and I didn’t really have to do anything. After that, we (exchange students) went to a planetarium which happened to be closed when we arrived from the train. After that, we went to what was basically a zoo, with different animals such as giraffes, hippos, ostriches, etc. Then we went to go eat lunch, which was burger king, which wasn’t very different from the US, besides the addition of some Argentinian pastries. This morning me and many of the other exchange students were still trying to wake up due to the hang out we had at me and my exchange brother’s house. This morning as me and brother Pedro always do we walked to school. Today me and other exchange students were split into groups to join some of the 5th years in their classes. The first class that I went to was a law class. It was very surprising to me because of how unique it was and for the fact that some Argentinian lawyers came to speak with the class and help them with their project. After that class we went to an English class. During this me and other students were able to have conversations about our lives and the Argentina’s were able to ask us questions about what it’s like in the U.S. After that class us and the Gonzaga kids met up for a lesson on the history of mate and the school system.
